End of Financial Year update from
Christ Church Mission's Community Centre, St Kilda

Hello <<First Name>>

A year ago we were wondering how we could address the increasing needs facing us.   With lots of help, we were successful in keeping our Emergency Relief program open (and we're still handling record demands).  And that experience tells us we can handle the current lockdown, happening just when we were seeing our other programs resuming.  Lots of people came to our aid last year to make sure we could financially address the needs.  Are you able to assist us in addressing the needs of the area in 2021/22?   Please help us through Give Now if you can.

Work This Way program delivered by Elaine
If you are a regular visitor, you will have met Elaine working on one of her many roles in our Centre. An example is that, in partnership with Port Phillip Community Group, Elaine has developed and is delivering the new Work This Way training program with 12 trainees taking part in a 20 week return to employment preparation project.  Elaine’s experience in group leadership and community engagement is providing an enjoyable and meaningful program for the participants.  Thank you Elaine.
More about Work This Way
We are always excited when we get the opportunity to support people who are keen to develop their skills and confidence.   Work This Way is designed to empower people who have been entrenched in unemployment and have a significant desire to re enter the workforce.  We offer introductory training in Hospitality and an introduction to horticulture practices and nursery procedures.  With relationships with local employers we are confident that we can support participants into meaningful employment.  This program is in partnership with our good friends at the Port Phillip Community Group
Cameras rolling at the Community Centre!
Foodbank Victoria (90 years young!) invited us to participate in the making of a short documentary to showcase an organisation that utilises their services and delivers the produce to the community by way of a meal.  Foodbank selected our centre as we have remained open throughout COVID-19, providing a 2 course take away meal.  The program would not be possible if it weren’t for organisations including Foodbank Victoria, Secondbite, Ralph’s Meats in South Melbourne Market and the City of Port Phillip.  Plus our regular volunteers! The documentary,
“Open House Community Meal”,  will be available on the Foodbank Victoria Website and a short version will be provided to us to add to our new website.  Check it out at www.ccm.org.au

Plant Sale
Our little nursery reopened to the public for the day on Saturday, April 24th, coinciding with Theatre Works' Makers' Market and Christ Church's Mini Book Sale.  We had 8 keen volunteers taking part in the plant sale and working bee.  We managed to raise $250.  Nice to know the Mini Book Sale and Makers' Market were also successful:
the neighbours all working together!
Our next Plant Sale is scheduled for June 5, supported by the volunteers and trainees from the Work This Way training program (above).

Mid-year greetings to all our readers.  Still hoping the day is not far off when we can welcome you again to the Centre.
